Something my children and I like to do is go foraging in our yard and our neighborhood. In the mid-summer months you can happen upon blackberries and blueberries and dandelions. Blackberries grow wild throughout the south and although bitter by themselves can be made into fantastic cobblers! I’ll add my personal recipe in at the bottom of the post! Hope you enjoy it as much as my family has. This last time we went we found huge blackberries, my youngest was tickled!
We also have a wonderful neighbor that let’s us pick her extra blueberries because she has so many every year! We make jam or pies or even just eat them with breakfast. I think it’s so incredibly valuable to teach our children and ourselves where food comes from, how it grows, and that it is all around us. Not some mystical item from some far off place that just appears on your plate when you are hungry. Everything thing that we do from day to day should be a learning experience and a reminder just how close we still are to the earth and how in tune we need to be with everything around us.
Next up we will be picking some dandelions, washing them and drying their roots for some dandelion root tea (made much less bitter with some mint picked from our yard and honey from a local bee keeper we met at chemo treatments!)

Blackberry Cobbler Recipe
- 1 cup butter
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1.5 cups self-rising flower
- 1/3 cup milk, room temp.
- 2 cups freshly foraged blackberries (gently washed)
- 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 2 tbl sugar
1. In a 10 in. round or oval backing dish melt 1/2 cup butter; set aside. In a sauce pan heat sugar and water until sugar melts completely; set aside.
2. Place flour in a mixing bowl; cut in remaining butter until fine crumbs form.
3. Add milk, stirring with a fork until dough leaves sides of bowl. Turn into floured surface; knead 3 or 4 times.
4. Roll out to an 11 in. x 9 in. rectangle 1/4 in think. Spread berries over dough; sprinkle with cinnamon.
5. Roll up jelly-roll style. Cut into 1/4 in. think slices and lay them in baking dish over butter. Pour sugar syrup over slices.
6. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Remove dish from oven and sprinkle sugar over the top and bake for 15 minutes more
7. Serve and Enjoy!
